Sault Area Hospital Foundation is grateful to announce a gift of $47,323 from the Sandra Schmirler Foundation in support of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Sault Area Hospital. They stand in the NICU and gather around the new incubator that was purchased with this donation.

Sault Area Hospital welcomes approximately 800 newborns into the world every year. Of these, roughly 15% require specialized care in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. The NICU plays a pivotal role in ensuring the health and well-being of these fragile infants, offering a lifeline to those in need. Sault Area Hospital will need to upgrade all eight incubators in the NICU over the next three years. The Sandra Schmirler Foundation's donation will help SAH bring this new equipment in sooner.

Established over 20 years ago in honor of the legendary curling champion Sandra Schmirler, the Sandra Schmirler Foundation has consistently strived to give critically ill newborns the opportunity to grow up and achieve their potential, just as Sandra did in the world of curling. This recent contribution demonstrates the Foundation's unwavering commitment to making a difference in the lives of these tiny champions.

Linda Ahde was proud to present a cheque on behalf of the Sandra Schmirler Foundation. As a local curler and a long-standing donor to the Sandra Schmirler Foundation, she was delighted to see the support from her favourite charity going towards her local hospital.

"The Sandra Schmirler Foundation extends its reach to hospital NICUs throughout Canada," Linda explained. "Their mission is to fund critical equipment that offers premature or critically ill newborns the opportunity to thrive. I’m so happy to see this gift supporting a brand-new infant incubator for Sault Area Hospital, which will serve hundreds of newborns for years to come."

Teresa Martone, the Executive Director of SAH Foundation, echoed her appreciation, stating, "We are so grateful to the Sandra Schmirler Foundation for their kind support of our tiniest patients. It is only thanks to donations from those who are passionate about access to healthcare that our hospital is able to provide outstanding care to our community."

On behalf of Sault Area Hospital Foundation's Board of Directors, staff, and the beneficiaries of this generous donation, thank you to every donor who supports the Sandra Schmirler Foundation. This generous gift reaffirms the importance of community support in ensuring that Sault Area Hospital continues to provide the best possible care to its youngest and most vulnerable patients. It is through these collective efforts that critically ill newborns in Sault Ste. Marie are given the chance to grow up and become champions in their own right.
