USW Local 2724 Enhance Security at SAH Emergency Department

United Steelworkers (USW) Local 2724, representing salaried workers at Algoma Steel Inc., has once again demonstrated their unwavering commitment to the well-being of Sault Ste. Marie and the wider community. With a generous gift of $56,500, USW Local 2724 has partnered with the Sault Area Hospital Foundation to enhance security measures at the Sault Area Hospital Emergency Department, providing a safer environment for patients and staff.

The impactful donation from USW Local 2724 demonstrates their dedication to mental health and addictions care. Recognizing the evolving healthcare landscape, USW Local 2724 members decided to channel their collective strength towards a cause that directly benefits the community they proudly serve.

"At USW Local 2724, we're more than a workforce – we're a family woven into the fabric of Sault Ste. Marie. Our recent profit sharing payout allowed us to give back to the community that has supported us for years," stated Rebecca McCracken, President of USW Local 2724. "By contributing to the installation of new security doors at the Sault Area Hospital Emergency Department, we are ensuring that everyone who needs emergency care can be treated in a safe and compassionate environment.”

Sharon Abrams, Patient Care Manager for the Emergency Department, emphasized the significance of this contribution. "In the wake of the pandemic, the heightened complexity of acute mental health and addictions care underscores the vital need for a secure healing environment. Installing new security doors stands as a crucial step towards ensuring the safety of vulnerable patients, dedicated staff, and visitors. This commitment to enhanced safety reflects our unwavering dedication to fostering a space of healing and support.”

This contribution marks a meaningful milestone in the longstanding partnership between USW Local 2724 and Sault Area Hospital Foundation. For over 15 years, Local 2724 has championed the Foundation's initiatives, with total donations exceeding $250,000. Notably, this latest gift stands as the fifth consecutive annual donation from USW Local 2724, exemplifying their steadfast dedication to the betterment of their community.

Teresa Martone, Executive Director of Sault Area Hospital Foundation, expressed heartfelt gratitude for the enduring support from USW Local 2724. "The impact of their contributions touches the lives of countless patients. From bolstering our Laboratory and Medical Imaging Department to now enhancing security for our Emergency Department, USW Local 2724 consistently shows up for our community in countless ways.
