On July 30th at 11 am, a group of Special Education Staff from the Huron-Superior Catholic District School Board won the $148,897.50 jackpot in the Sault Area Hospital Foundation’s (SAHF) July electronic and online 50/50 draw. Their lucky number (U-4181110) was drawn electronically and they were contacted immediately.

The full group of winners includes: Lorraine Belanger, Joe Chilelli, Nick D’Amato, Chrissy Dewar, Karen Dick, Krystina Drager, Bonnie Dupuis, Lynda Francoeur, Chris Jones, Suzanne Levesque-Tomchak, Sarah Montgomery, Cheryle Palmer, Anna Rendell, Desiree Scornaienchi, Jamie Smith, Kathy Sutherland, Anita Turcotte, Michelle Walsh, and Rosanne Zagordo. The 19 winners will split the jackpot, each winning $7,836.71. One member of the group resides in Echo Bay, one in Blind River, two in Elliot Lake and the remaining are all from Sault Ste. Marie, ON.

The group have been purchasing tickets for SAHF 50/50 together for over a year. Anna Rendell has been the leader of their group play, collecting $5 from each team member and purchasing the tickets. “When I got the call that we had won, I set up an emergency video call. I wish I would have recorded that one. We couldn’t believe it! We switched our group play to SAHF 50/50 last year to support local healthcare because we all need our hospital. It just made sense. We’ve been supporting through the summer and are excited to keep on supporting through this upcoming school year,” said Anna.

Running a group play is simple. Anna, as the leader of her group, collects the cash from everyone in her group play and heads online to purchase their tickets. She buys the tickets in her name, but adds “In Trust” to her last name to notify SAHF that these tickets are not solely hers. Because she is pooling her team’s money, she is able get more chances to win for the whole group! When called with the good news, she identified all 19 winners and collected their information to verify their win.

“Every draw, every month, is so very special,” said Teresa Martone, Executive Director, Sault Area Hospital Foundation. “We know with the beautiful weather and summer holidays it can be easy to lose track of time and miss grabbing your monthly tickets. Seeing a group of educators like this come together and continue to support local healthcare, even while they are not in class, is so wonderful. Educators have been on the frontlines during this pandemic as well, keeping children engaged in class and online throughout the last year. Thank you to all the educators working hard during this difficult time. It’s a deserving group win, and a win for our whole community with the funds raised for our hospital.”
