What is an Endowment?

An endowment fund is like a charitable investment fund.  The donation is permanently invested and the income earned each year is used to support the Sault Area Hospital Foundation.

The Sault Area Hospital Foundation established its first endowment in 1996 to Orcology Education needs for healthcare providers at Sault Area Hospital.

Only the income earned is used to support the purchase of high priority medical equipment, education needs, and future program development.  When an urgent need arises, or new technology is available, or in future years when a new program is developed in a specialized area, the Endowment Fund will be there to help.

Year after year, the Endowment impacts hospital care in a very bona fide way.

As part of your Legacy, a named endowment is a deeply personal statement of who you are or the impact a loved one has had on your life, and what you believe should be supported long into the future at Sault Area Hospital.

1. Create an Endowment – The Gift that Keeps on Giving

The Endowment Fund is like a savings account for new equipment or education.  The principal is protected and only the income or a portion of the income is expended annually.   The annual income is used to purchase high-priority annual medical equipment needs or used for education. 

Endowment Funds are carefully invested to ensure consistent growth and return.  Our professional management firm invests the funds using a conservative investment strategy.  The Foundation Board of Directors and Governance/Finance Committee oversee the work of the investment portfolio.

Alternatively, you can put a bequest in your will to specify that funds be added to our organization’s general endowment. 

2. Make a Memorial Gift – Honour a Loved One by Supporting the SAHF

Making a memorial gift to the Sault Area Hospital Foundation through an endowment can honour an individual who was admired, loved and respected. Your gift is lasting tribute to this individual while building their legacy in our community.
