Keeping New Parents Comfortable
This summer, gifts brought two brand new birthing beds to our delivery rooms.
While it might look like any other hospital bed, this “birthing bed” is special. It has dozens of extra features designed for one thing: labour and delivery.
Having a baby is not an easy process, so it’s important to provide as much comfort as we can to expectant parents. Letting a labouring patient move around the room, or get into a new position, makes a huge difference. These new beds come with strong rails, hand grips and calf supports to allow a variety of positions. Coupled with our wireless fetal monitoring systems (which the community also helped us purchase!), the patient has more freedom to move.
The beds are sturdy enough to handle patients up to 500lbs, but light enough to move quickly and easily. And when it comes time for delivery, the bottom section of the bed comes off to let the care team get in place for the birth. These new beds also offer an extra position: a new “squat bar” helps provide stability when squatting on the bed.
A birthing bed has a price tag almost double that of a regular hospital bed, coming in at $22,370 each. Thanks to generous local gifts, our hospital now has two of these brand new beds.
