Seeing the big picture with an MRI
If a picture is worth 1,000 words, an MRI is worth over 1,000,000.
Detailed images are a key part of diagnosing and monitoring many medical conditions. Every year that goes by, medical technology gets better. Just like digital cameras or cell phones, the technology in imaging equipment improves over time. New technology can often provide clearer, sharper, more detailed pictures in less time.
Much of the medical imaging equipment at our hospital came in when the hospital was new – over 10 years ago. That means much of it is now coming due for replacement.
Sault Area Hospital will need a new $3.2 million MRI next year (2022). This one of the most expensive pieces of equipment in our hospital. New tools often come with new benefits and features.
For example: the main part of the MRI is shaped like a donut, with a hole in the middle called a “bore hole”. The patient is put into the bore hole during the MRI, and for some patients the small space can cause anxiety. New MRIs are roomier, with larger bore holes to increase patient comfort.
A new MRI may also be able to perform more detailed scans in less time. A quicker scan may mean less time per patient – allowing more patients to receive an MRI in a day. Over time, this could shorten the wait for MRI services. The MRI is a critical tool at our hospital and local support helps ensure this service remains in our community for another decade.
