Hello! I'm John, and I honestly think I have the best job!

I joined Sault Area Hospital Foundation in May 2024, working as a Donor Relations Specialist, and am now in the role of Director, Philanthropy. I came to SAHF after living and working in Toronto for over 20 years, when it finally felt like it was time for me to come home to Sault Ste. Marie. I feel incredibly fortunate that this opportunity at the Foundation happened to coincide with my desire to be back with my family.

What does a typical day look like for you?

A typical day for me is all about connection. I spend most of my time calling donors to share our gratitude or meeting them over coffee to hear their stories. When I’m not out in the community, I’m back at the office crafting funding proposals and impact reports so our supporters can see exactly where their generosity goes.

Since I'm still relatively new to the healthcare side of fundraising, I’m learning about capital equipment needs – and it’s been a steep learning curve! I used to get by without knowing the difference between a videolaryngoscope and a laparoscope, but now? It’s all part of the job.

What do you love most about the work you do?

It really comes down to the relationships. There is a real privilege in the openness people show when they share the deeper stories of their lives, their families, and the legacy they want to leave behind.

Whether we are commiserating over Northern Ontario snowfalls, discussing hospital needs, or hearing a heartfelt story about how the Emergency Department saved a loved one, those moments are the foundation of everything we do.

Why do you work at Sault Area Hospital Foundation?

I actually began my career studying Urban and Regional Planning, but it never quite felt like the right fit. It wasn't until I eventually made my way into the arts and then into fundraising that everything finally clicked.

After spending over 20 years in Toronto, working at the Toronto Public Library Foundation and several community and human rights organizations, I knew that fundraising was my most fulfilling path. However, I also knew it was time to come home.

Today, I’m just happy to be part of this team. Whether I’m collaborating with the talented people inside our office or connecting with leaders across the community, being able to support the hospital’s mission makes the work incredibly rewarding.

What do you like to do outside of work?

John & Lucy
John & Lucy

I am a 100% dog dad! I love walking and playing ball with my dog, Lucy, and spending quality time with my friends and family.

I’m also a big reader— Scandinavian crime detection is a favourite sub-genre. About 15 years ago, I started collecting vintage editions of Agatha Christie books, and my collection has grown to around 900 editions from the 1940s to the 80s. If you need a reminder about what REALLY happened on the Orient Express, feel free to give me a call.

If you could choose a theme song for your work day, what would it be?

It’s a bit of an oldie, but I’d go with "This is It" by Kenny Loggins. To me, that song is all about being fearless, making choices, and being ready to stand up for what’s right.

What message would you want to share with our supporters/community?

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you!

Thank you for your generosity, for sharing your stories, and for believing in the work we do. Most of all, thank you for understanding the importance of collectively supporting our Sault Area Hospital. I'm sending you all so much gratitude.
