Smooth Surgeries, Shorter Recoveries
In 2021/22, Sault Area Hospital plans to replace $3.465 million in surgical equipment. While these aren’t new tools for our hospital, many offer exciting new features. They can improve comfort, safety and recovery times for patients, and attract new surgeons to SAH!
OR Microscope
The microscope magnifies a surgeon’s view during delicate procedures on vessels, nerves or ears. Replacing a 20+ year old model, the new microscope can connect to a display screen – so everyone in the OR can see what the surgeon sees. This view helps nurses provide better support and creates opportunities for teaching.
Minimally Invasive Surgical Instruments
You may know Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) as “laparoscopic surgery”. These tools allow surgeons to operate using several small incisions instead of one large opening. MIS procedures lead to quicker recoveries for patients, with lower risks. MIS is the new standard for many procedures, and having the latest MIS tools will help us attract new surgeons to SAH.
New tools come with new technology. The OR integration system is a set of hardware and software. It connects MIS instruments, scopes, and other tools to live display screens. It also lets us record images and video into the patient's chart. Without the integration system, many of these new pieces of technology could not work. These are just a few of the many tools that community gifts will help us purchase this year!
