Keeping Renal Treatment on Track
Did you know Sault Area Hospital (SAH) has a team that fixes and monitors hospital equipment? They're called Biomedical Engineers, or "Biomed" for short.
This team services more than 2,000 machines in the hospital! They help make sure equipment is working as expected, so care teams have the tools they need, when they need them.
When new equipment arrives or needs upgrades, Biomed reviews manufacturer guidelines and protocols. Sometimes, this means they need special tool kits to service equipment.
This year, Biomed has asked for the Foundation's support to purchase testing kits for renal dialysis machines. The test kits come with custom tools and parts so Biomed can service, repair and calibrate the equipment here at SAH. Fixing equipment on-site helps keep patient treatments on track and avoids unplanned downtime.
Dialysis is a life-sustaining treatment for people with kidney problems. Most patients will need treatment several times a week. It is critical that care teams have reliable equipment available to treat renal patients. Each testing kit costs about $8,000. With community support, we can make sure that Renal patients can get the treatment they need, close to home.
