New views for Breast Imaging
The latest tools can help provide more accurate diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer.
Technology changes quickly. But the changes in breast imaging technology in the last decade could be life-saving. With our mammography unit due to be replaced, SAH is using the opportunity to bring in the latest imaging technology. New machines come with features that we currently don’t have access to in Algoma – including:
Digital Breast Tomosynthesis (DBT)
Also known as “3-D mammogram”, DBT uses low-dose X-rays to create a detailed picture of the breast. Because it gives a 3-D view, it can provide extra information that may be required for some patients. With a higher accuracy, DBT reduces the risk of false positive results.
Contrast Mammography
Contrast mammography uses a special dye to highlight blood vessels on a mammogram. It can provide a more detailed image than a standard mammogram, helping diagnose a breast abnormality. For some patients, the information a technologist can get with a contrast mammogram is similar to what an MRI can offer, but without the long wait time.
A new mammography unit with these features is estimated to cost $685,000. With the help of generous supporters, we can start using it to save lives in 2021.
