How Hospital Lotteries Make a Difference
Lotteries have always been part of Sault Area Hospital’s fundraising. From the first “5 Car Draw” in 1989, many community members have chosen to give their support by purchasing lottery tickets.
Our latest lottery, SAHF 50/50, launched in November 2019. It started as a test: would our regular lottery supporters purchase an online ticket? The answer has been a resounding YES, with over $850,000 raised to date with SAHF 50/50.
To many in the community, this may seem like a new windfall for our hospital – but really, it’s been lucky timing in a very uncertain year.
Last year, our Foundation raised $1.4 million with lotteries and events. Many of last year’s draws and events won’t happen this year, due to COVID-19.
In a normal year, there would be a car draw, several trip draws, and dozens of events – but this is not a normal year. These typical draws and events depend on gatherings, physical tickets, and lots of contacts... all of which aren’t possible right now. Luckily for our entire community, the online 50/50 draw is helping fill these gaps that these fundraisers have left.
In this challenging time, we are grateful for every bit of support we get. While only a portion of any lottery ticket price comes back to our hospital, every ticket sold is critical to purchasing new equipment. Every dollar that comes to our Foundation helps ensure you and the ones you love can get the care you need at Sault Area Hospital.
