What is a chemistry analyzer?

The laboratory at Sault Area Hospital is home to a lot of sophisticated medical equipment. While much of what is analyzed in the lab is microscopic (very small!), it can take big tools – like chemistry analyzers – to get results.
Each chemistry analyzer is over 8 feet long, and there are two of them in the laboratory at SAH running 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Our chemistry analyzers are the backbone of our laboratory and support patient care in almost every area of our hospital. The two chemistry analyzers at SAH run about 870,000 tests every year. That’s over 2,000 tests a day! These tests can show how well your organs are functioning, measure blood sugar, check for infections and generally give care teams the “full picture” of their patient.

When a patient comes into the hospital, one of the first things a care team wants to know is what’s happening internally. Lab results give our health care providers information on what might be making a patient sick.
Just like an x-ray gives doctors a picture to see inside the body, chemistry analyzers provide measurements of key parts of blood, saliva, urine and plasma.
These measurements, when compared against a standard measurement or a previous measurement for the same patient, can help identify problems, or determine whether treatments are working. And the impact is extensive – this applies to almost every single patient that comes into our hospital.
Our laboratory needs two chemistry analyzers to meet the demands of our hospital and community. Our chemistry analyzers are the backbone of our laboratory and patient care at our hospital. Donor support for this equipment will support each patient that comes into SAH, every step of the way on their care journey.
Double your impact! Gifts towards our Chemistry Analyzers are being matched until June 30, 2025, so your donation will go twice as far!
