Helping Patients Move Through the Emergency Department

At Sault Area Hospital, patient beds play an important role in helping care teams move patients through their care journey safely and comfortably. When patients come to the Emergency Department (ED), they are seen based on how serious their condition is, not the order they arrive. This means the sickest patients are treated first.

When the ED is busy, space is limited. The goal is always to move patients through the ED efficiently – whether that’s caring for them so they can go home, or admitting them and moving them to another unit inside the hospital.
When admitted patients are waiting for a room, they may need to stay in the Emergency Department until a bed is available. Having enough hospital beds helps patients move out of the ED, and into another unit, sooner. This creates critical space for incoming emergencies.
These beds, designed for longer stays, are more comfortable than a stretcher and can help improve the patient experience during what can be a stressful and difficult time.
Your donations this spring will go twice as far. Thanks to Tony and Anna Ruscio and Family, your impact is doubled – with every gift matched 2x! As a family that has been impacted by physician shortages in our community, they know the importance of the Emergency Department.
“When you don’t have a doctor, that’s where you go,” said Tony. “Giving to the hospital helps everyone. We all benefit.”
